COSTUME DESIGNER
LINDA MUIR

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Costume designer and research maven Linda Muir is a longtime collaborator with film director Robert Eggers. She created the 19th century wardrobe for Eggers’ film Nosferatu. It is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.

In this exclusive interview Muir talks at length about her process. It is her deep reverence for detail that anchors the film in reality. Muir’s costumes communicate socio-economic status while conveying the emotional state of the characters, their phycological turbulence, and ultimate unraveling.

Muir discusses the plunging necklines in contrast to the taboo of the ankle. The discovery of the self-tightening corset. Finding the high heel steel boots worn by Count Orlok. Seeking out fabrics, bonnets, flowers, shoe-makers, jewelers and a lucky find, the patterns in a pamphlet from 1838.

At the end of this riveting interview you will want to watch the film again with renewed interest and respect for the mastery that went into creating the costumes. As a special bonus, find out her cabinet of curiosities (normally reserved for members) as she shares some of her favorite things with us such as the Henry David Thoreau motto Linda Muir lives by.

Enjoy.
